Captain Marvel to appear in Avengers: Age of Ultron?

15 Nov

We already know that a Captain Marvel movie is in the works from Marvel. But could we be getting a sneak peak at her in Avengers: Age of Ultron?

You know the super fast flip-through of comic book art at the start of every Marvel feature (right before they show the Marvel logo)? Usually this part features art from the character being featured in the film or trailer. In the latest “Extended trailer” for Age of Ultron, I found this frame that clearly shows Ms Marvel (what Carol Danvers used to call herself before taking up the mantle of Captain Marvel). Could this be a hint? Even if the role for Captain Marvel has not yet been cast, is there a plan to reveal her in the next Avengers movie after all?

The 1st ‘Iron Man 3’ full trailer hits the web

23 Oct

After the leaked photos from the set, the officially-released photos, the teaser trailer and the teaser trailers for the trailer … the first full 2-minute trailer for Iron Man 3 is finally out.

As the image shows, Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr) isn’t exactly in a happy place. The trailer reveals that an all-powerful enemy (The Mandarin played by Ben Kingsley) destroys everything Tony has — his mansion in Malibu, his armory of Iron Man suits, etc — and even threatens the love of his life, Pepper Potts (Gwyneth Paltrow).

Longtime Marvel fans should notice a number of not-so-subtle reveals: the Mandarin and his Makluan Ten Rings of Power, the Iron Patriot armor (whose pilot is unknown at present) and a hint of the self-assembling armor from Warren Ellis’s award-winning Extremis story arc.

The trailer is big, loud and ends on a cliffhanger with Tony at his lowest, dragging his deactivated and useless armor through the snow. It’s textbook Hollywood movie magic that leaves you wanting more. Iron Man 3 is the first instalment of Marvel Entertainment’s latest series of movies leading up to Avengers 2 in 2015.

Iron Man 3 opens in Singapore on 25 April 2013.

Avengers Blu-Ray trailer

The trailer for Marvel’s The Avengers Blu-Ray special combo pack is out. I bet you can’t wait to get your hands on it, either. A lot of the footage is familiar but I swear there are parts there I’ve never seen before (and I saw the film three times).

The Avengers in Blu-Ray will be out 25 September 2012.

Can you imagine David Hasselhoff as Nick Fury? Yes, it really happened. Be happy Samuel L. Jackson replaced him for the Marvel movie francises.

Super hero franchises don’t always get it right the first time. A number of comic book franchises today flopped miserably in their first forays into television and film. Through some trial and error (Captain America with a plastic shield? A Batman suit with nipples?) , various comic-book movies and television shows have gotten their acts together and delivered incarnations that audiences have finally come to embrace.

The Avengers: movie vs comic book

As a reader of almost four decades, I place a great importance on faithfulness to comic book canon. I winced when Spider-Man spun biological webbing instead of from mechanical web shooters. I groaned at an original X-Men lineup that didn’t include Scott, Jean or Warren. I was furious when Galactus appeared as a formless space cloud.

Where The Avengers (and its forerunners Iron Man, Iron Man 2, Thor, Incredible Hulk and Captain America: The First Avenger) differ from other super-hero movies is Marvel’s retention of full creative control. That is, unlike most other films based on comic books where the characters are simply licensed to a film studio, they instead remain in the hands of the comic creators at Marvel themselves.

My expectation is that The Avengers should stay true to the original comic book source material like no other film franchise. So does it deliver?

I answer the obvious questions about how the Avengers movie compares to the original comic book source material in this story written by myself and published in Yahoo!
